Iwakura Tomooki (岩倉具起)

Tomooki IWAKURA (July 13, 1601 - March 17, 1660) was a Kugyo (court noble) in the early Edo period. He was the second family head of the Iwakura clan, a branch of the Murakami-Genji (Minamoto clan) Kuga family.
He served at the Imperial Court for four generations from the time of Emperor Gomizunoo (the hundred and eighth Emperor) to that Emperor Gosai (the hundred and eleventh Emperor) and he was promoted to Junii Chunagon (Junior Second Rank, vice-councilor of state.)

His father was Tomotaka IWAKURA, Shogoi Mokuryo (Senior Fifth Rank, Bureau of Carpentry). His mother was a daughter of Mototsugu SONO of the Konoefu (Headquarters of the Inner Palace Guards). His younger brother was Arishige CHIGUSA (who restored the Chigusa family, and who was Shonii Gon Dainagon (a provisional chief councilor of state). Tomoaki IWAKURA was his son. Tomomi IWAKURA, a meritorious retainer during the Meiji Restoration, was his descendant.

In 1619 he was given a peerage.
In 1620 he became Jiju (Chamberlain) of the Emperor Gomizunoo and in 1622 he was entered the Konoefu (Headquarters of the Inner Palace Guards.)
After this, only his official court rank was raised, and in 1642 he attained Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) and became ranked as Kugyo (court noble). In 1644 he was appointed Sangi (Councilor), but the following year he resigned his post. In the same year he served as Toka no Sechie Geben, a Kugyo who supervised many matters outside Jomei Gate during Toka no sechie (Imperial Court Ceremony). In 1652 he became Junii Gon Chunagon (Junior Second Rank, Provisional Vice-councilor of State), but in 1656 he resigned his post.
